Photographs around an ear-piercing celebration focus on the gathering and the moments the family approves, such as relatives together and the child in festive clothes. The parents decide whether the moment itself is recorded, and we confirm in writing how any such request would be handled.
Some family celebrations include a moment that is brief, personal and, for a child, potentially uncomfortable. This guide is about the gathering around that moment, which is where photography adds the most and risks the least.
It is part of our overview of Hindu, Sikh and Christian family-occasion photography. For other childhood occasions, see Annaprashan ceremony photography requests.
What we advise on
We scope only the celebration the family has approved. The procedure, who carries it out, and where and when are for the family and the provider to decide.
Our role is to understand the gathering, plan family photographs around it and follow the parents' instructions about what is recorded.
The moment itself
The central moment does not have to be photographed. Many families prefer not to, and a photograph taken at a moment of discomfort may not be one the child, or the family, wants to keep.
If the parents do want something recorded, they decide what and from where, and tell us. Our guide to comfortable and inclusive event photography explains how we respond to people's comfort.
Photographs the family may want instead
The gathering offers many images: relatives arriving, the child with grandparents, a family group, the celebration meal, quiet moments with parents. Pick the ones that matter to you. Our priority photograph list builder helps you rank them.
If the child is happier later, a short family session after the moment may be more successful than one before. Plan flexibility into the schedule, and let the child's mood decide.
Children and responsible adults
The responsible adults decide who may be photographed with the child, what may be photographed and how images are shared. Where an institution or practitioner is involved, ask what applies and share the answer with us.
Our guide to children's event photographs lists the questions authorised adults must resolve. Name one person who gives instructions on the day.
Sharing the photographs
Decide who receives the gallery and whether relatives may share it. A private gallery for named relatives is a common choice. Our photo sharing and privacy plan helps you record the rules.
An example scenario
For example, imagine a family of twenty gathering at home to mark a child's celebration. The parents ask for photographs of the family in festive clothes beforehand, the child with grandparents and the meal afterwards, and ask that the moment itself not be photographed.
Coverage could be planned in two short windows, before and after, so that the child is relaxed. This is a hypothetical illustration of how the parents' choices shape the plan.
What we confirm
We confirm the date, place, photographer assigned, what you receive and the quotation in writing, together with the parents' instructions. Ask us whether extras such as video or a second photographer can be included for your date.
Questions to settle before the day
Ask the family who will comfort the child if they become upset, and whether a quiet space is available. Ask whether the child would like a familiar person nearby during the family photographs, and whether any relatives should be photographed with the child only afterwards. Ask also how long the child usually needs to settle in a new place, and plan the first photographs for after that time has passed.
These details shape the order of the day. Leaving the photographs until the child is calm, and the celebration until the family is ready, usually produces images everyone is glad to keep.
Organising and sharing the gallery
Families sometimes change their minds about what to keep once they see the gallery. Agree in advance that the parents may remove images before wider sharing, and that the full set stays private until they decide. This gives the family control, and it means nobody has to decide on the day what they will want to keep in future.
Tell us the order of the day and when the child is usually calmest, and we will confirm a plan with you.

Ask about family photosCommon questions
Should the procedure itself be photographed?
That is for the parents to decide, and many families choose not to photograph it. The moment can be uncomfortable for a child. Tell us what you want and what to leave out, and we follow your lead.
Who carries out the piercing and where?
That is arranged by the family and is outside our role. The procedure, provider and setting are for you and the provider to decide. We only ask about the celebration around it, so we can plan family photographs.
What can be photographed instead?
The gathering, relatives together, the child in festive clothes before or after, and the celebration meal. List the moments you want and those to avoid. We plan around them, and we follow the parents' lead on the day.
How are children's images protected?
Decide with the responsible adults who may see the gallery and whether any images may be shared outside the family. Our guide to children's event photographs lists the questions to settle, and we deliver as instructed.

What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
