Fashion-show and runway photography

Your looks photographed as they pass, from a position agreed before the first model walks.

Short answer

Agree the collection, the show order and our photographer's position with the producer before the day. A runway gives each look a few seconds. The plan therefore depends on access, such as a spot at the end of the runway, a place in the pit or a fixed seat. Live-show coverage is different from an advertising shoot, which is planned and lit for the garments.

A fashion show is brief and exact. Models walk to music, looks change at speed and the audience looks at the runway for less than a minute per designer. Photographing it well begins before the show, with access and agreement.

What does the producer arrange?

The producer controls the runway, the lighting, the order and our photographer's position. Ask them where our photographer may stand and whether the position is shared with press. Positions at the end of a runway are often limited and set in advance.

Get this in writing. Our guide to confirming photography access before committing to a booking explains why. We plan within what the producer confirms and tell you honestly what that position can capture.

What is the collection, and who is in the show?

List the designers or labels, the number of looks for each and the order. Names of models, if they are to be credited, and accurate spellings of collection names help later. Providing accurate names and roles for important event participants explains how to prepare them.

If several designers share a show, several designers sharing one runway programme deals with fair representation.

What can our team capture?

A runway image is a live record. The lighting belongs to the show and may be dim, coloured or moving, and the models walk at speed. A good set typically includes a full-length image of each look as it approaches, selected details, the finale and some front-of-house images of guests and the room.

Stage lighting, LED screens and mixed light explains what show lighting means for exposure and colour. Garment colour may differ from the real fabric, and we say so rather than promise perfect accuracy.

Runway or campaign?

TypePurposeConditions
Runway coverageRecord the live showShow lighting, fixed positions, brief moments
Campaign shootPresent garments for advertisingPlanned light, styling and repeat takes

If you need campaign images, they are a separate assignment. A show cannot be repeated for the camera.

A hypothetical example

For example, a boutique-label show has 30 looks over 18 minutes on a 12-metre runway, with a designated end position shared with two press photographers. The producer allows one photographer in the pit.

A plan could cover each look from the pit position, the finale, detail frames during the intermission if the garments are accessible, and front-of-house images of the audience. The producer approves a first selection for press within a day.

Crew and positions

Overlapping demands, such as runway, backstage and front-of-house, may need more than one photographer. What an additional event photographer changes explains the trade-offs. Our concurrent activity and crew planner helps test options.

Backstage

Backstage is a working area and a private one. Dressing, hair and make-up involve people in states of undress or preparation. We plan only images that have been specifically authorised. See backstage fashion preparation within agreed boundaries.

What to tell our photographer

Send the show order, designers, venue plan, lighting plan and the producer's position rules. State what images are needed and the approval route.

How does this affect the booking?

A runway is short, but rehearsal, backstage and front-of-house add time. We confirm date, venue, crew and deliverables in writing when we confirm the booking. For general price factors, see how photography pricing and scope work.

Questions to settle

Who else will photograph the show? Are models' images subject to separate agreements? How quickly do press images need to be delivered? Who approves captions and credits?

With these answers in place, our team can concentrate on the moment each look passes. Send them with the show order and we will confirm the plan.

A note on timing the day

Runway days start early and compress fast. Ask the producer for a schedule that shows load-in, model call, rehearsal, doors and show time, and mark the point where our photographer must be in position. When our photographer arrives with time to test light on the runway, they make better use of the few seconds each look provides. Send us the running order and the producer's schedule, and we will confirm where our photographer should be and when.

Checklist

  • Get the show order, designers and number of looks.
  • Ask the producer where our photographer may stand.
  • Ask whether press and other photographers share the position.
  • Share the lighting plan and runway length.
  • Decide what images are needed: full looks, details, front-of-house.

Common questions

Can every look be photographed?

That depends on the show order, the runway length and the position available. Fast shows, changes and restricted positions can mean some looks are missed. Ask the producer for the show order and positions first, and we tell you honestly what to expect.

Is a runway photograph the same as a campaign photograph?

No. A runway image records a live moment under show lighting. A campaign image is planned and lit for the garment. If you need campaign images, commission them separately.

Where does our photographer stand?

Usually where the producer designates, such as the end of the runway or a media pit. Positions may be shared with other photographers and press. Ask the producer in writing and share the answer with us.

Can backstage be photographed too?

Only where the producer, designers and models agree. Dressing and personal areas are private. See backstage fashion preparation within agreed boundaries for how to ask.

What happens next: You send your event details on WhatsApp. Our team reads the brief, asks what is missing, then confirms in writing whether the date, venue and coverage can be booked, with a quotation. Opening WhatsApp does not send anything, and a message is not a booking until both sides confirm.
